Here we go! Every Saturday, I am going to post some discussions highlighting never before seen battles in anime. For today, I’m going to do a very basic battle, Itachi Uchiha versus Pain. I’m a big Naruto fan, if you haven’t noticed, so this should be fun. In this post, I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each character and tell you guys exactly who I think is going to win. Enjoy!
Age: 18-21 (Part I and II)
Nationality: Hidden Leaf Village
Kekkei Genkai: Sharringan, Mangekyo Sharringan
Affiliations: Hidden Leaf (Former), Akatsuki
Strengths: Genjutsu, Genius-level intellect and strategist, and Forbidden Uchiha jutsu (Yata Mirror and the Totsuka Sword)
Weaknesses: Lack of stamina, debilitating illness (reducing his ability to use his forbidden jutsu for extended periods)
Itachi Uchiha is still an enigma among Naruto fans to this very day. With his background mostly obscure until Naruto Shippuden, Itachi Uchiha is undoubtedly one of the most powerful characters to ever walk across the stage of Naruto. He is a quick-thinker, always thinking ahead of his situations and the cost-benefit of his actions, earning him recognition from another like-minded genius, Hiruzen Sarutobi.
He was calm and collected in battle, never underestimating his opponent, while using his deadly abilities to end his battles quickly. He is also a pacifist who wanted to replace the the chaos and despair of the ninja world with everlasting peace. In any case, Itachi’s accomplishments include: totally outmaneuvering Kakashi Hatake, a known genius as well; defeating Orochimaru with the blink of his eye; and, overpowering Sasuke whom was at his peak up until the point.
Itachi did have a few flaws, which was his lack of stamina and his terminal illness. However, how much of this affects him in a battle between the leader of the Akatsuki and a self proclaimed god?
Age: 35 (Part 2)
Nationality: Hidden Rain Village
Kekkei Genkai: Rinnegan
Affiliations: Hidden Rain Village, Akatsuki
Strengths: Peak stamina and chakra reserves, ability to control six versions of himself simultaneously, invincibility when using the Six Paths all at once.
Weaknesses: Too predictable when using all six paths, senjutsu
Itachi may have been called invincible by Zetsu, but Pain was dubbed invincible both practically and in theory by all who knew him. Pain is the moniker of Nagato, a young orphan of the Hidden Rain village who lived through the Second Shinobi World War. Although he was trained by Jiraiya who encouraged him to walk and upright path to the peace he desired, Nagato’s vision became diluted and corrupted upon meeting Obito and creating the Akatsuki.
Nagato was hailed the strongest member of the Akatsuki unanimously. He outright defeated Hanzo the Salamander with ease, even though the Sannin were incapable of doing so. Also, his Rinnegan gave him the ability to perform extremely powerful jutsu without fatigue, command six versions of himself simultaneously, and even cast an infinite rain loop over his village to monitor it. By all means, Nagato believed himself to be a god. The Rinnegan made his every wish possible, mind you.
However, Nagato’s main weakness seemed to be senjutsu, as he struggled with Naruto and Jiraiya. Jiraiya even casted a powerful genjutsu/senjutsu technique that destroyed three of his six paths. Also, Pain rarely sent all of his six paths in a battle because he was afraid that they were too predictable. He knew how strong Jiraiya was, so he planned accordingly and surprised Jiraiya with all six paths when Jiraiya was already too weak to fight.
Also, he destroyed the Hidden Leaf Village over a fear that his moves were becoming too predictable. With a genius like Itachi in battle, will Pain’s Rinnegan be enough?
Who Would Win?
This battle is very tough to decide. On one hand, Itachi is a genius as has the Yata Mirror and the Totsuka Sword. On another, Pain has the Rinnegan and the six paths. Allow me to be logical here. Itachi doesn’t have the stamina to deal with the Six Paths of Pain. If we were to simulate a battle, I’m assuming that Pain and Itachi don’t know much about each other’s abilities, yet their eyes cancel each other out obviously. Pain would probably approach Itachi just as he did Jiraiya.
He would attack Itachi with three paths and wait for him to slip up. Itachi, of course, will try to come up with a strategy to beat Pain, which would probably be Susano. Though, Itachi does have use of the Amaterasu, but I’m figuring that one of the six paths would absorb it. The bad thing about it is that if Itachi does use his Mangekyo Sharringan, he starts to become weak.
Remember how Jiraiya thought he won against Pain, and then boom, three more showed up and revived the other three that Jiraiya killed? That strategy would work well against Itachi. Three paths would effectively require a great deal of Itachi’s chakra to defeat. Even if Itachi comes away victorious, he would still have to fight another set of Pains. That’s too much. If Itachi had more stamina and wasn’t so sick, then he could defeat Pain. But, this isn’t a battle of ifs.
